Undergraduate Route

On these courses you are a student studying for a degree, this could be a :
  • BEd, BSC/BA with QTS
  • MA with QTS
These courses are University based and usually take 3 or 4 years to complete and students can gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) through these routes. Applications for these routes is through UCAS (Universities & Colleges Admissions Service) - www.ucas.com

Graduate Route: SCITT / PGCE

If you have a degree it is possible at any time to apply for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). This can be University based with student status or in England it can be school based. The school based route is School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT). The training is provided by schools in partnership with HEI's and LEAS's. A PGCE could also be part-time through the Open University and may involve modular, distance learning. Applications for these routes are through the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR) - www.gttr.ac.uk

The two routes are outlined below:

Route: PGCE
Status: Student (NUS) Trainee Teacher
Finance: £9,000 a year for secondary maths, science, English, ICT, D&T, MFL, RE & Music.
£6,000 a year for trainees in all other subjects.
Some subjects also receive a ‘golden hello’ at the end of their induction year.
Qualification: PGCE & QTS
Course: The course is mainly university based with 2/3 blocks of teaching practice in local schools. Spans October-June (36 weeks), with 8 & 12 week placements in two different schools.
Assessment: Continuous with 3 assignments.

Route: SCITT
Status: Student (NUS) Trainee Teacher
Finance: As PGCE
Qualification: PGCE & QTS
Course: School based for three terms. Placement A, one term in school, placement B, two terms in school.
Professional studies delivered at residential locations and school based tutoring.
Assessment: Continuous with 4 assignments & portfolio of evidence.


Graduate route (Employment Based) : GTP

The Graduate & Teaching Programme (GTP) enables schools to appoint unqualified applicants to train on the job over a period of up to two years, to gain Qualified Teacher Status. The GTP applications are handled by Designated Recommending Bodies (DRB’s) in England.

The Suffolk/Norfolk DRB is based at the Professional development Centre, Woodside Road in Norwich, 01603 433276. All DRB’s are listed on the TDA website. DRBs recruit trainees from their local area. After making contact with your DRB you will need to find a school to employ you as an unqualified teacher. DRB’s may help you find a school. Each DRB has its own application process, dteials are published in local press and on LEA websites.

The key facts about the GTP route are given below:
  • Status – employed as a teacher
  • Finance – some candidates receive a salary grant of up to 15k, others are employed as instructors by schools and receive a training grant.
  • Qualification – QTS
  • Course – 3 Terms are spent within two placements. The theoretical side is taught through a day-release programme.
  • The course usually follows the school year of September to July.
  • Based on continuous assessment and the production of a portfolio.
  • Apply through the DRB’s or with the support of a school to the TDA.
