Open University - flexible PGCEI am a former lecturer in the further and higher education sectors with a post compulsory PGCE qualification. I have also taught in secondary schools as a supply teacher. When my children were born I decided to take a break from teaching as I was unwilling to commit to working in evenings and weekends. Becoming a parent changed my priorities. I always knew I would return to teaching one day. Education is my passion, and always has been. I loved school and adored my first teaching job as a Field Teacher at the RSPB many years ago. I knew then it would be my vocation. While the children were little I worked for at a SureStart Children's Centre organising courses for parents. So I never really left education. Rather than return to higher education, I felt a strong desire for the energy of a secondary classroom. Unfortunately, I needed to retrain in secondary education. A lot of the teaching skills and theory from my post compulsory PGCE are transferrable to this qualification. The only difference is that I am assessed on my scientific knowledge and the qualification comes with QTS. The Open University course is perfect for my circumstances. My children will both be at school in September and I will be able to work around their holidays without having to worry about childcare. The course is flexible and takes into consideration past qualifications and experience. For me, I have been able to undertake a PGCE without having to commit to one whole year on a traditional PGCE course. By the time I complete my course I will have spent a total of 14 weeks in school placements. I also chose to undertake some module study to refresh my teaching skills, and to get back into 'teacher mode'. Aylsham High School is an excellent school and I am really enjoying undertaking my placement here. I like the ethos of the school and the support you get from all staff, particularly within the science department and the training school. The school offers some excellent opportunities for continuous professional development. Susan Burton - OU student |
